The Onion is eerily prophetic

It was supposed to be a joke. Or, at the very least, an exaggeration. It turned out to be pretty close to what actually happened.

On Jan. 17, 2001, The Onion ran an article on the eve of the Bush inauguration, quoting the new president as proudly proclaiming “our long national nightmare of peace an prosperity is finally over.”

The article is reprinted here along with several dozen links showing that these fictional “goals” of the administration wound up being true to form to its policy throughout the four and a half years that Bush has been in office. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you might even jab yourself in the stomach repeatedly with a sharp object. You can blame Jon Adams for any bodily harm that results from the reading of this story -- he’s the one who discovered this link.

  • Paul Krugman actually references this Onion article in the beginning of his book The Great Unraveling. Which just goes to show how awesome Paul Krugman is.
